Agartala: On Tuesday, the city police arrested two tribals of Kanhmun village in North Tripura bordering Mizoram with four street dogs, tied tightly inside gunny bags which were being allegedly carried for trafficking to neighbouring states.
According to police, the dogs were rescued from a vehicle at Buddhamandir area in Agartala. The Police patrol had intercepted a vehicle carrying the dogs in suspicious conditions.
An FIR has been registered against the accused persons, namely Johnunsanga and Lalthanmuia under Prevention of Cruelty against Animals Act, 1960. The suspects have been identified as the residents of Kanhmun village. The dogs were later on handed over to the NGO, working on the protection of animals.
The detainees admitted that the dogs were caught from the street and they have been on their way to village to sell them in Mizoram. In last few years there have been several instances of sudden disappearance of dogs from the street and even from the houses. Police suspected that they were being trafficked to neighbouring states where canine meat happens to be popular among some ethnic communities.
