TSA rings the alarm bells as the number of guns at airports soars

Undisclosed and loaded guns are being caught in screens recently, more than usual.

- True Scoop

In recent days, the TSA is reporting an alarming number of loaded weapons getting caught in screenings at airports. In a recent incident at New York's JFK airport, a woman from Connecticut was recently caught attempting to bring a loaded gun through security while walking with her child. According to officials, the gun had a bullet loaded in the chamber, making the situation even more dangerous. This is just one of the many instances of undisclosed loaded guns getting confiscated at the airport.

According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the number of guns caught at US airport checkpoints reached a record high in 2022. However, officials are warning that 2023 may see an even higher number of incidents. Reports have already surfaced from officers in Seattle, Washington DC, and Indianapolis regarding an uptick in incidents involving firearms at airports. While explaining what might be the cause of this uptake, TSA administrator David Pekoske said "What we see in our checkpoints reflects what we're seeing in society," he further continued, "In society, there are more people carrying firearms nowadays."

Last year, the TSA reported intercepting a total of 6,542 guns at airport checkpoints throughout the US. An overwhelming majority of the confiscated firearms, 88%, were found to be loaded with ammunition. While it is permitted for travelers to pack unloaded firearms in checked luggage, they must inform the airline of their intentions to do so during check-in.

Despite laws allowing for concealed carry permits, firearms are strictly prohibited in carry-on bags or passenger cabins. This has led to numerous incidents of individuals being caught attempting to bring guns into public spaces, including airports, and highlights the ongoing issue of gun culture in America.
