A 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit South Pacific, according to US Geological Survey, triggering a Tsunami. The authorities in New Zealand has ordered people to move away from waterfront areas.
Fiji had also issued a warning but it was later cancelled. Australia's Bureau of Meteorology (ABM) has issued a warning for Lord Howe Island. Although, Tsunami has been triggered but no evacuation was needed, as per ABM.
The European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) stated that the epicenter of quake was 417 KM east of Tadine and there was no report of damage till now in the area of French territory of New Caledonia.
The 7.7 magnitude quake was followed by three other termors ranging between 5.7 to 6.1.
As the Pacific is located in "Ring of Fire", it experiences frequent earthquakes. Over 4300 people were declared dead after an earthquake and Tsunami in Indonesia's Sulawesi Island three years ago.
2,20,000 people were killed and large scale destruction was reported during the 9.1 magnitude quake off the coast of Indonesia's Sumatra Island.
