After days of war with the Indian government, Twitter on Tuesday has finally complied with the new IT rules as it appointed an interim Chief Compliance Officer.

The micro-blogging site has also agreed to share the details of the official with the IT ministry as early as possible.

Earlier, the Indian government had issued a notice to Twitter giving a last chance to “immediately” comply with the new IT rules. The notice also warned the site of losing exemption from liability under the IT Act for its non-compliance.

Likely afraid of repercussions, Twitter last week had assured the Centre that it is in advanced stages of finalizing the appointment of chief compliance officer a pre-requisite under the new IT norms. The platform even guaranteed to share the details of the officer within a week.

A Twitter spokesperson on Tuesday said “the company continues to make every effort to comply with the new guidelines, and is keeping the IT Ministry apprised of progress at every step of the process.”

Under the new IT rules, the digital platforms have been asked to work with more diligence as they will be responsible for the accounting of misleading content on their respective platforms.

As per the rules, eminent social media intermediaries -- those with over 50 lakh users -- are required to appoint a grievance officer, a nodal officer, and a chief compliance officer. Moreover, these officers have to be Indian residents only.
