A major controversy seems to be brewing in Karnataka at a time when there is a debate going on in the country over women's safety & security and also religious freedom. The Udupi Police on Wednesday filed an FIR against three girls who were suspended for secretly recording private videos of another girl in a nursing college. The Udupi video case is taking a communal term as a section of media alleges that the three women named Alimatul Shaifa, Shabanaz, and Alia, secretly video tapped 'Hindu Girls' and then shared it with 'Muslim' groups. However, ASP of Udupi Siddalingappa was quoted who at first downplayed the communal angle into the case and stated that did not find any videos from the three girls who were accused of filming other students. However, the Udupi video case incident took the center stage when the opposition BJP slammed the government and accused the Police of doing an investigation under political pressure. Now, the question is what is Udupi video incident, and why it is slowly & steadily becoming the talking point on social media? Let's understand in detail-
What happened in Udupi's Netrajyoti College?
Let's start with the latest development. After political and social media outrage, Udupi Police have filed two cases. One case linked to three female students and college administration regarding the deletion of a video of a student filmed in the toilet. The second case is linked to the uploading of a hidden camera video on YouTube channels. The shocking incident took place in the women’s washroom of Netrajyoti College in Udupi. As per reports, Alimatul Shaifa, Shabanaz, and Aliya had allegedly placed video cameras in the women's washrooms to record their fellow students showering or using the toilets. When the incident came to the fore, other students started protesting against the college administration. As a result, Netrajyoti College in Udupi then suspended the three students over two reasons. The director of the college was quoted saying that the girls were suspended for two reasons - first, they brought mobile phones to college, which are banned, and second, they used them to film a video in the washroom.
Amid multiple theories and backtracking on social media and also from the Police department, the National Commission for Women is also sending its team to inquire into the Udupi College toilet video case thoroughly. Reportedly, Khushbu Sundar, the South India member of the National Commission for Women, will lead the investigation during her visit to Udupi. This decision was revealed by former member Shyamala Kunder.
Notably, former Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai was quoted saying, "Police is not taking any action...They wanted to take action against the girl who raised an alarm, the whistleblower rather than the culprits. After a hue and cry, they have lodged an FIR. State Govt is saying it is fake news. If it is so, why were three girls suspended and why is there an apology letter?...Police have failed...They are under tremendous political pressure. I urge them to work without any political pressure."
After the public outrage, a case has been filed against three female students who were responsible for creating the video, as well as against the management board of Netrajyoti College. They are charged with evidence destruction. The police have registered multiple cases under sections 509, 204, 175, and 34. The decision to register the case came amidst significant opposition from BJP leaders, various Hindu organizations, and women across the state.

I'm from Udupi and nobody is talking about Alimatul Shaifa, Shabanaz and Aliya who placed cameras in female toilets of their college to record hundreds of unsuspecting Hindu girls. Videos and phots that were then circulated in community WhatsApp groups by the perpetrators.
