After the Uttarakhand glacier broke and damaged Rishi Ganga project as well as destroyed lives and property, Uma Bharti, a BJP leader said it was a matter of concern and warning. She added that as a minister she had spoken against having a power project on Ganga or on its major tributaries.
Uma Bharti was union minister of water resources, river development and Ganga rejuvenation during the first term of NDA.
Bharti added that a glacier breaking off had triggered massive damage including a damage to power project. She said, this disaster at Rishi Ganga in the Himalayas is not only a matter of concern but also a warning.
In a report published in The Indian Express, Bharti was quoted, "When I was a minister, my ministry in its affidavit about the dams in Uttarakhand in the Himalayas had requested that it is a very sensitive region, and, therefore, power projects should not be built on the Ganges and its main tributaries."
She said electricity shortfall could have been met by national grid. She said she was earlier in Uttarkashi and now in Haridwar.
Meanwhile, after the bursting of glacier more than 12 are
declared dead while over 170 people are still missing.
