We all are known to authoritative regime of North Korea, under the government of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) led by Kim Jong-un. While human rights breaches in the country have always made headlines, another addition to the list is the ruling party's fashion prohibitions or restrictions on what their residents can do.
Jong-un recently published a list of prohibited
fashion trends in the region's government-run publication, and you'll be
surprised at what made the cut.
It comes as a state-run journal warned that more needs to be
done to prevent the country from succumbing to "capitalistic
culture," according to the Yonhap news agency in South Korea.
The North Korean government's main newspaper, Rodong Sinmum,
published an article expressing concern over young North Koreans increasingly
adopting western design trends. “We must be wary of even the slightest sign of
the capitalist lifestyle and fight to get rid of them,” the piece stated.
Let's have a look at the fashion trends that are banned in
North Korea now:
1. Skinny jeans: Skinny jeans have become a global trend, topping bestseller lists and remaining one of the most popular styles for women around the world, hence ban!
2. Spikes, mullets and dyed hair: According to the
publication, the communist dictatorship has forbidden all but 15
"non-socialist" haircuts and instead issued an ordinance on "correct"
hairstyles.
3. No long hair for unmarried women: Unmarried women are
prohibited from keeping long hair.
4. Mao style suit: The modern Chinese suit, which is Jong's
signature style, can't be worn by anybody else except for him.
5. Ripped denim: Ripped
jeans has also made it to the list, as it seen as a western cultured outfit.
6. Piercings: Lip and Nose piercings are a no-no in North
Korea.
7. Horn-rimmed glasses: No civilian is allowed to wear glasses
that are comparable to those worn by the dictator.

8. Branded T-shirts: Branded apparel, once again, is seen
as a symbol of western influence and is thus prohibited in the country.
9. Leather trench coats: After Jong first wore the coats in
2019, they quickly gained popularity in the country. Kim Jong Un's next action
is to outlaw leather coats in order to prevent citizens from emulating his
style.
