In the Uttar Pradesh panchayat polls, BJP faced an unexpected setback in the Hindutva epicenters of Varanasi, Ayodhya, Kashi, and Mathura. On May 4, the counting tally suggested that Samajwadi Party has made huge gains and their candidates in the areas have surged ahead that of BJP.
The disastrous defeat of BJP in these regions comes after the state suffers from a lack of medical facilities amid the Covid19 spike. Uttar Pradesh is witnessing numbers of death due to a shortage of oxygen supply and lack of medical treatment of Covid19 patients.
Citizens are accusing the BJP government of abandoning Varanasi on its own fate. A tweeter user said that no local BJP leader is available as they have switched their phones and gone into hiding.
Following people’s frustration over the Covid crisis, Samajwadi Party has managed to secure victories in key districts in Uttar Pradesh panchayat elections. In Varanasi, which is Prime Minister Narendra Modi Lok Sabha constituency, BJP has been able to win only eight out of 40 district panchayat seats. Whereas SP has won with 14 seats, Bahujan Samaj Party won five, Aam Aadmi Party and Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party won one seat, and Apna Dal three.

BJP has failed in the crucial seat of Ayodhya despite its ambitious plans of turning Ayodhya into the Vatican of Hindus. Ram Temple Construction could not save the party from this huge defeat and BJP garnered just six out of 40 seats. Meanwhile, SP won 24, and BSP five seats.
On this unanticipated defeat of the BJP, people on Twitter are expressing their gratitude towards the people who voted wisely. Some of the netizens are claiming this defeat as the ‘end of BJP.’
Founding Editor of The Wire, MK Venu tweeted, “The Sangh Pariwar will soon realize the Hindu Vote of their imagination also demands oxygen beds, medicines, minimum employment, minimum income, and MSP, besides Ram Mandir.”
Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh has reported 25,858 fresh coronavirus cases with 352 fatalities in the last 24 hours.
