Vaazhai True Story
Vaazhai is said to be based on a true story of Director Mari Selvaraj's fictionalised childhood memories. Vaazhai is the story of an oppressed community working as labourers in banana fields is narrated through the eyes of a school boy Shivanaindhan (Ponvel M). Shivanaindhan is robbed of his childhood as he has to work with his mother and older sister to transport heavy banana bunches on his head across long distances. His only respite is his school. The film explores how this oppression and intensive labour affects him emotionally.
It is pertinent to mention here that Director Mari Selvaraj has been accused of copying the story from short story written by Cho Dharman. Cho Dharman in a social media post wrote, "I received numerous phone calls from friends asking me to watch the film Vaazhai. They told me the film mirrors my short story. I watched the film today. My younger brother and my maternal uncle hail from Ponnangurichi, a village near Thiruvaikundam. The main crop there is bananas. Whenever I visited, I observed the struggles of young boys carrying banana stalks, which inspired my short story 'Vaazhaiyadi...'. In my story, there are elements like a lorry, a driver, a cleaner, a middleman, an owner, young boys and girls, their hardships, and wage issues."
However, in response, Mari wrote, "I just read the short story 'Vaazhaiyadi' by writer Cho Dharman, which is about the laborers who carry loads of bananas. It's a good story... Everyone should read it. Thank you, writer Cho Dharman."
