Bihar's Vaibhav Suryavanshi on Monday scripted history after becoming the youngest player to be bought in an IPL Auction. During IPL 2025 Auctions Day 2, Vaibhav Suryavanshi was bought by Rajasthan Royals at Rs 1.10 crore. Vaibhav Suryavanshi is only 13 years old.
After the player was bought, the Vaibhav Suryavanshi Age Fraud controversy sparked on social media. Many fans opined that Vaibhav Suryavanshi has deliberately reduced his age i.e. 'Vaibhav Suryavanshi Age Fraud'. Talking about Vaibhav Suryavanshi's age, the cricketer is 13 years and eight months old.
Vaibhav's father reaction to age fraud
Vaibhav Suryavanshi's father Sanjiv who owned farmland in his native Motipur village which is 15 km from Samastipur town in Bihar, was lost for words after his son's 'IPL Placement'. Vaibhav Suryavanshi's father also reacted to the age fraud allegations. Sanjiv was quoted by a newswire saying, "When he was 8 and half years old he first appeared for a BCCI bone test. He has already played India U-19. We don't fear anyone. He can again undergo age test."
How does BCCI's bone test work?
After the T20 World Cup 2022, the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) decided to re-introduce Yo-Yo test and Dexa scan results as criteria for selection. While Yo-Yo was previously introduced as a test of aerobic endurance fitness that involves running between markers placed 20 metres apart at increasing speeds, the Dexa test is said to help trainers measure body fat percentage, lean muscle mass, water content, and bone density of the players.
Before introducing a software for the test, BCCI's bone test used to take 2 to 3 months for the results to come. As per India Today, a BCCI note reads, "The X-rays are taken at the respective home centres of state associations at the X-ray centre in the presence of independent BCCI observer and sent to the BCCI AVP Department.
BCCI AVP department collates them in a proper format and send it to two (2) independent radiologists on the BCCI panel for interpretation of bone age. Reporting also takes time since we have about 4 radiologists doing ratings of 38 associations and every radiologist does interpretation of about 8-9 associations."
"It can take any time between one day to three four days to get the reporting of associations from the consultants depending upon the workload on them and number of players. Entire process takes around two (2) months to be completed," the note added.
It is pertinent to mention here that back in 2019, Jammu and Kashmir fast bowler Rasikh Salam was handed a two-year ban after he was found guilty of submitting an incorrect birth certificate.Salam is now back in the IPL. Salam has been bought by RCB at Rs 6 crore.
