In a shocking and bizarre incident, a Bihar nurse on Friday had allegedly injected an empty syringe into
the arm of a young man during the Covid-19 vaccination drive in Chapra town of
Saran.
The video of the incident that went viral on the social media, shows the nurse administering an empty injection in the name of Covid vaccine at the vaccinated centre. The incident that took place on June 21 had drawn as severe criticism from the netizens which forced the Health Department to take stern action against the nurse.
The nurse has been slapped with a show-cause notice and has been removed from the Covid vaccination centre.
The man who received an empty injection has been
identified as Azher Hussain, who went to Covid vaccination centre at Behrampur
Imambara Madarsa, along with his friend Aman Khan, to take the first dose.
During vaccination, the nurse, without filling the vaccine into the syringe,
had injected it into Hussin's arm, and the entire process was captured into the
mobile phone by Aman Khan. However, neither noted that the syringe was empty
and happily returned home.

It was only after seeing the video at home that gave goosebumps to Hussain and
he realised that an empty syringe was injected into his arm.
In the video, the woman nurse was found interacting with others, as she took
the syringe from a wrapper and injected it into his arm without filling it with
the vaccine.
Are there any side effects of inserting an empty syringe?
According to the medical experts, the side effect of an empty syringe administer depends upon the amount of air present in the syringe in lieu of the Covid vaccine.
It may be noted here, that amount of air in the Covid vaccine dose is around 5 cc, which might not have any lethal health consequences. However, in rare cases, if the air travels from the muscle to the blood vessels it could create air bubbles.
These air bubbles could further turn into blot clots leading to cardiac arrests, blockages in the blood supply to the lungs or brain. Perhaps the air injected in place of the Covid vaccine is in the muscle and chances are low that would flow into the blood system leading to severe repercussions.
What can be done if you fear the adverse impact on health?
If in case you are worried about the outcomes that an empty syringe insertion could bring up you can visit a doctor and can get an echocardiograph done or a Doppler to ascertain that there no air bubbles in the blood circulatory system.
