Seismic activity was reported in the far east of Russia at 12:54 local time, on Tuesday. The geophysical survey of the Russian Academy of Sciences has stated that it is the result of a volcanic eruption from the Shiveluch Volcano. 15 hours later the survey said that the volcano was still erupting. The eruption sent a large cloud of ash and soot roughly 20 kms into the air. This resulted in roads, cars and even entire towns getting covered with ash. 90 kms away from the eruption, the town of Ust-Kamchatsky also felt the effects as residents watched their entire town go dark while waves of ash flew in and covered the entire town.
Satellite imagery shows an ash plume of 400/250 kms which continues to spread towards the south and west of the eruption. The survey has also given the eruption the βredβ designation, the highest possible. Alerts have been issues to aviation and there is a high likelihood of hot lava flowing into the streets in the region. The Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky-Ust-Kamchatsky highway is said to be at high risk since the lava is likely to flow 20 kms further.
