Sooryavanshi Rating: 3/5

Over the years, Rohit Shetty has subtly enlarged his cop universe, keeping the audience interested and die-hard fans of the genre on the edge of their seats. Following the success of Ajay Devgn's Singham series and Ranveer Singh's Simbaa, Sooryavanshi (Akshay Kumar) arrives amid great pomp, turmoil, and loud theatrics.

The film has all of the traits of a Rohit Shetty film: attitude, style, and showmanship but due to a multi-starrer film, the characters fail to do the justice with their roles.

Ajay Devgn narrates this cop action saga, which reminds us of the various terror attacks that Mumbai has faced, from the 1993 serial blasts to the 2008 terror attack on several landmark locations in Mumbai, including The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai, and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). The plot of the film unfolds as the city prepares for the largest attack yet, with some Lashkar sleeper cells being activated and 600 kilogrammes of RDX left over from the 1993 serial bombings being utilised for the purpose.

DCP Veer Sooryavanshi arrives, armed with a solid objective to defend the city from yet another major attack. He is so dedicated to his job that his family, including his wife Riya (Katrina Kaif) and son Aryan, come second to his enormous mission.

Apart from the high-octane physical clashes, there are a slew of high-octane chases involving automobiles, motorcycles, and helicopters, in which Akshay Kumar demonstrates his indisputable action prowess. But somehow Akshay Kumar looks old and this time his josh and garam khoon attitude is missing in the film.

Katrina Kaif is beautiful on screen, but she is having limited role in the film always negotiating the fallout for derailed marriage.

Highlighting the difference between a patriotic and a perfidious Muslim, something Hindi film never gets tired of doing while cheerfully stereotyping a community, a scene shows a maulvi and his men carrying a Ganpati idol to safety when word spreads that a bomb has been planted in an area where a temple and mosque stand side by side. To get a rise out of the audience, ‘Chhodo kal ki baatein kal ki baat purani/Naye daur mein likhenge milkar nayin kahani hum Hindustani ‘(from the 1961 Hindi film Hum Hindustani) plays on the soundtrack. You desperately want to warm up to the sentiment. Unfortunately, it does not ring true.

Well into the second half, the film brings back the heroes of both Singham Ajay Devgn and Simmba Ranveer Singh to fight the terrorists alongside Sooryavanshi. In-jokes flow thick and fast as the three men team up for the climax in the ATS building.

None of the actors from the supporting cast i.e. Gulshan Grover, Jackie Shroff, Kumud Mishra, Jaaved Jaaferi, Sikandar Kher, Nikitin Dheer leave any memorable mark. Each one of them is either a miscast or lost.

Overall it is an action pack film and Rohit Shetty must be planning for another sequence but as it is a multi-starrer movie so none of the characters performs well in their roles.
