Sekhon was wanted for a number of crimes, including the murder of bouncer Jagroop Singh alias Jagga in Amritsar, as well as attempted murder and a ransom demand of Rs 10 lakh from singer Prem Dhillon.
He was hiding at his relative Mahinder Singh's residence in Chamiari village near Ajnala, where he was surrounded by over 100 police officers including DSP Balbir Singh, DSP Gurinderpal Singh Nagra and ASP Abhimanyu Rana. DGP Dinkar Gupta further revealed that the accused opened fire on the cops earlier. Only after seeing DSP Brar did Preet become suspicious of the encounter. On realising they were encircled by police and could not escape, Preet then took to Facebook and posted a photo showing himself and Nikka and said "I am surrounded by cops" in an attempt to make the post go viral.
Throughout the operation, DSP Brar constantly requested Preet to surrender by calling him his son. Suspecting an encounter, Preet urged that the police make an announcement over the Gurudwara's loudspeaker so that everyone knows he and his partner are surrendering and the police cannot encounter them.
Preet was persuaded to surrender by DSP Brar and DSP Nagra working together. Both of the accused laid down their weapons before coming out and then surrendered.
The Police have also recovered a large quantity of arms and ammunition from their possession. Meanwhile, the third accused identified as Gurlal Singh was also suspected to be with Preet and Nikka. He was later nabbed from Tarn Taran.
