Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan's final film of the year Dunki is all set to be released in theaters on December 21, 2023. On Tuesday, Dunki Drop 4, or Dunki's trailer was released on social media platforms, and following that fans went gaga over the upcoming comedy-drama. Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, Dunki features Shah Rukh Khan, Taapsee Pannu, Boman Irani, Vicky Kaushal (in a special appearance), and more. Going by Dunki's trailer, the movie revolves around Hardyal Singh Dhillon, or Hardy, played by Shah Rukh Khan. He has only two dreams in his life i.e. to win the affection of his IELTS classmate, Manu (Taapsee Pannu). And, with his friends, he wants to emigrate out of India. Since the trailer of the movie is so close to reality, the question arises whether Dunki is a true story or Dunki is a real story or not.
Is Dunki a true story?
The answer is no and yes at the same time. Although Dunki is a fictional story of Hardyal Singh Dhillon's ambition to go outside India, its narration of illegal immigration somewhat hints that it has showcased the infamous Donkey flight technique.
As per a report which quoted an inside source, "While the film does deal with the issue of immigration, it isn't based in Canada or has anything to do with Indians based in Canada." The report further emphasizes that "Dunki" is a sensitively crafted film that explores a man's journey in search of a better life, delving into the various emotions he experiences along the way.
Now, talking about the Donkey flight technique, it is quite famous when it comes to illegal immigration. As per the information available, Donkey flight is an illegal immigration technique used for unauthorized entry into countries like the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. This infamous method has gained notoriety among migrants, particularly those from Indian states such as Punjab, Haryana, and Gujarat.
Furthermore, in the Donkey flight system, conmen exploit migrants by facilitating illegal border crossings, using methods such as containers and ships. Agents apprehend migrants at borders, leading to subsequent deportation. Notably, Dunki Drop 4 or Dunki's trailer has showcased the container scene. It hints that Dunki is discussing the donkey flight system in detail.
Apart from this, it is reported that the Migration Policy Institute notes that migrants, mainly unskilled laborers, employ "Donkey Flight" to enter the United Kingdom through other European Union (EU) countries. Hence, in Dunki's trailer, Shah Rukh Khan can be heard saying 'We Indians did not ask Britishers if they know Hindi but still welcomed them'.
Notably, Dunki's storyline has been kept a secret until its release. However, the trailer confirms Raj Kumar Hirani's movie will be focusing on illegal immigration issues.
The official synopsis of the movie says, "Join Hardy and his four ‘ullu da patthas’ as they embark on their remarkable journey of love, friendship, and nostalgia."
