In yet another deadly gun violence incident, 2 people were confirmed to be killed and 28 others were injured after at least 'two unidentified' people opened fire at a block party on Saturday in Baltimore, Mayland, USA. As per the initial reports, the people who were killed in the Baltimore shooting include an 18-year-old woman named Aaliyah Gonzales and a 20-year-old man named Kylis Fagbemi. Notably, all 30 injured people had gunshot wounds. Baltimore Police Acting Commissioner Richard Worley in a press conference informed that the people who were attacked in the Baltimore mass shooting were between 13 and 32 years old. In fact, of those injured, 15 were younger than 18 years old i.e. minors.
What happened in Baltimore's 'block party'?
As per the local police, hundreds of people had gathered in South Baltimore on Saturday night for the "Brooklyn Day" event. Brooklyn is probably best known internationally as a district of New York city, but a southern Baltimore district shares the name. On the Brooklyn Day event, the authorities informed that there had been a block party in the area on overnight Saturday. However, all of a sudden, multiple shooters opened fire just after 12:30 a.m. local time on Sunday (0430 UTC/GMT). In the mass shooting, 2 youths lost their life, while 28 other were injured with gunshot wounds.
Coming to the investigation, Worley in the press conference stated that there were “at least two” people who opened fire during the shooting, but authorities are investigating there may have been more. Addressing the media Worley said, "All we know right now is that we had multiple (shooters) open fire on a large crowd of people who were out during the block party. We don’t know if they were targeted or if (the shooters) were just shooting indiscriminately down the street.."
The Baltimore mass shooting also got a reaction from the Mayor who outlined how there is a need for strict laws to control guns. "This tragic incident is another glaring, unfortunate example of the deep issues of violence in Baltimore, in Maryland and this country and particularly gun violence and the access to illegal guns..” Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott said in a news conference.
As of now, the shooters are still absconding and the local Police have urged anyone with information or who may have captured video footage, including from security cameras, to come forward.
