In a shocking development, a 17-year-old Chinese badminton player named Zhang Zhiji died while playing a shuttle match on the court. Zhang Zhiji's death took place on Sunday night during a tournament in Indonesia. As per reports, Zhang Zhiji was representing China in the Badminton Asia Junior Championships in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Zhang Zhiji was facing Japan's Kazuma Kawano when he suddenly collapsed. Now, Zhang Zhiji video is going viral on X and fans around the world are left shell-shocked over the incident. The question arises what happened to Zhang Zhiji or what is Zhang Zhiji's death reason?
What happened to Zhang Zhiji?
Zhang Zhiji's viral video showcased the 17-year-old suddenly collapsed. At first, the people present there could not understand what happened to Zhang Zhiji but after a few seconds, the 17-year-old Chinese shuttler was loaded on a stretcher and taken to an ambulance. CPR was seemingly not administered on the court.
Talking about Zhang Zhiji's cause of death, it is reported that he died due to cardiac arrest.
The Badminton World Federation was quoted saying that they are conducting a thorough examination surrounding Zhijie's death and want to see if the correct protocols were followed. "Zhang's death at the Badminton Asia Junior Championships in Yogyakarta, Indonesia is a tragic occurrence, and we are taking all necessary steps to thoroughly review this matter in consultation with Badminton Asia and Badminton Association of Indonesia."
Notably, fellow Chinese players at the tournament honored Zhang with a moment of silence and teammates raised his jersey at the podium.
