The race for Artificial Intelligence (AI) dominance has started and Google is the most recent player to participate in it. Google on Monday unveiled Bard, its ChatGPT rival that leverages LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications), Google's own language model. ChatGPT has been sweeping the internet and experiencing massive traction around the globe. The traction was too high that ChatGPT became the fastest-growing consumer application in the history of internet applications. The popular artificial intelligence chatbot, ChatGPT, from OpenAI, has reached 100 million users. Launched in November last year, ChatGPT has attained the feat in a short span of two months. As a result, Google management called ChatGPT "code red" as the AI-powered platform received positive responses from users across the world. In order to break the potential dominance of ChatGPT in the future, Google unveiled its very own AI-based chatbot named Bard. Now, the question arises, what is Bard and how is it different from Microsoft-backed ChatGPT?
What is Bard?
Described by Google's CEO Pichai as an ‘important next step in our AI journey,’ Bard, according to the CEO, 'seeks to combine the breadth of the world's knowledge with the power, intelligence and creativity of our large language models.' In layman's language, Google Bard is an AI-powered chatbot that can offer answers to many queries in a conversational way -- similar to ChatGPT. As per the blog shared by Google, Bard draws on information from the web to provide fresh, high-quality responses.
How Bard is different from ChatGPT?
Notably, Bard is a direct rival of ChatGPT, therefore their role is same. For the unversed, ChatGPT is a pre-trained transformer-based language model developed by OpenAI. It’s capable of generating natural language responses to a wide range of topics and has been trained on a massive dataset of over 8 million web pages and 45 terabytes of text. Now, coming to Bard vs ChatGPT or key difference between Bard and ChatGPT, here's what you should know-
At its core, Google's chatbot is powered by LaMDA, Google's language model built on Transformer, a neural network architecture. Interestingly, ChatGPT relies on GPT-3 language model, which is also built on Transformer. Google Research invented and open-sourced Transformer in 2017. Bard will provide fresh, high-quality responses by drawing on information from the web, and can also be used to simplify complex topics. To make sure Bard's responses meet a high bar of quality, safety and groundedness in real-world information, Google will take external feedback, and combine it with its own internal testing.
How to use Bard?
As of now, Google Bard is not available for testing to the public, but 'trusted readers' have access. Google is releasing a "lightweight model version of LaMDA," which requires significantly less computing power. This will allow Google to receive more feedback. Google's official blog says, "We'll combine external feedback with our own internal testing to make sure Bard's responses meet a high bar for quality, safety and groundedness in real-world information."
Furthermore, it says, "Bard seeks to combine the breadth of the world’s knowledge with the power, intelligence and creativity of our large language models. It draws on information from the web to provide fresh, high-quality responses. Bard can be an outlet for creativity, and a launchpad for curiosity, helping you to explain new discoveries from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to a 9-year-old, or learn more about the best strikers in football right now, and then get drills to build your skills."

Google Bard vs ChatGPT
Google has been strictly focusing on feedbacks before rolling out the final product. Feedback for Google Bard, powered by LaMDA, is also crucial for the company. The software giant unveiled LaMDA in 2021. However, a former employee alleged that its language model offered racist and sexist responses. The employee also alleged that LaMDA is "sentient." Another Google Bard vs ChatGPT difference is below-
ChatGPT also offers incorrect answers. However, its developer, OpenAI, claims that the chatbot will improve as further upgrades are constantly being rolled out. A report recently claimed that Google's LaMDA is also getting better at responses and on some occasions, it outperformed ChatGPT.
Google has been working on its language model for a while, but the company paused its public rollout after allegations from its employee. Google CEO Pichai indicated during the latest earnings call that the world is ready for generative AI, following the positive reception towards ChatGPT. He added, "I feel comfortable with all the investments we have made in making sure we can develop AI responsibly and we'll be careful."
