In recent years, Japan has experienced a growing phenomenon called Hikikomori. It is the Japanese word used to describe people who live a reclusive life, away from societal engagements and responsibilities. Japan is a peculiar and interesting nation where an intense work culture prevails. Most people are expected to work long hours and have trouble advancing their careers in a competitive society. Children are not exempted either, as they have to compete at a high level in schools. Many people in Japan have stepped away from this environment and found solace in isolation. Often coming out of their houses only to shop for groceries and essentials. Some have abandoned that as well and have resolved to stay home in absolute terms.
The people of Japan have recognized Hikikomori as a rampant problem, which the government is intent on fixing by offering monetary and emotional support to affected citizens. Even though hikikomori is not a clinical diagnosis, it is known to have caused a rise in the instances of anxiety and depression. The term was coined in 1990, while Japan was riding a technological and economical wave, which had an effect on the work culture and professional lives of its citizens. Since then, there has been a steady increase in the prevalence of hikikomori, to the point where now, it is an issue that can’t be dismissed.
This is relevant for people living outside Japan as well because certain aspects of this have been seen in many other countries as well. Not to mention the fact, that the covid-19 pandemic forced the whole world to shut itself in for extended periods of time just a couple of years ago. The whole world was then made privy to the psychological effects of isolation. Some are even dealing with them today. Hence, it would be a good idea for people all over the world and not just the Japanese, to take stock of the situation.
