‘Waris Punjab De’ chief Amritpal Singh’s associate Lovepreet Singh alias Toofan, was released from jail on Friday. The development came a day after supporters of Amritpal Singh armed with swords, guns, and lathis laid siege to a police station in Punjab on Thursday. The protest became violent when protestors clashed with police, shattered barricades, and forcefully entered the police station.
But who is this Lovepreet Singh, AKA ‘Toofan’?
Twenty-nine-year-old Lovepreet Singh hails from Tibar, a village in the district Gurdaspur of Punjab. His father’s name is Lakhwinder Singh. According to one of his family members, he is a small farmer and a Sikh preacher who is always vocal on Sikh issues.
Before joining ‘Waris Punjab De’, Lovepreet was associated with ‘Majha Kisani Sangharsh Committee’.
Toofan is also known for filing an FIR against Shiv Sena leader Harvinder Singh Soni, who was accused of using derogatory language for Harmandir Sahib, after which the police arrested him and presented him in the court.
Lovepreet Singh’s family stated that he had married two years ago, and his first child was born on February 9. They further claimed that he was at the hospital with his wife on February 15, the day the alleged crime was committed.
“It is clear that Sikhs are slave and we have to face humiliation. I had no role in the case registered against me. I am thankful to all for my release. I am thankful to God,” said Lovepreet Singh who came out of jail while raising slogans of ‘Raj Karega Khalsa’ and ‘Amritpal Singh Jindabad’.
For the unversed, Lovepreet Singh was arrested by police on February 17 on charges of kidnapping and assault on a Chamkaur Sahib-based resident Varinder Singh, following which the supporters of Amritpal Singh broke through police barricades with swords and guns outside Ajnala Police station in Punjab.
