Mahima Kaul was the Public Policy director for India at Twitter. She has resigned from her post in January but as per reports she will continue to stay at Twitter until March for completing the process of transition.

Kaul resigned because she wanted to focus on her personal life.

Why so much controversy over her resignation?

There is controversy after her resignation becomes public because the government of India had asked Twitter to withhold some accounts, primarily those who were tweeting about farmers protest, including one misleading or false hashtag. Twitter, earlier complied with the order but it later on unwithheld the accounts.

Why the accounts were unwithheld?

The accounts were unwithheld as per Twitter's rules of content but it did not get down well with the government of India and the government again cautioned Twitter.

Indian government said Twitter is just an intermediary and all the laws are primarily with it to govern technology. Moreover, as per sources, the government cautioned Twitter and its employees that penal action could be taken against the company with upto severn years of imprisonment for its employees if it didn't comply with the orders.

However, Twitter turned Nelson's eye to the government's orders but users of Twitter and international activists and public figures are of the view that Kaul resigned due to such warnings by the government of India.

However, Twitter said Kaul's resignation is not linked to warnings by Indian government. Kaul wishes to focus on her personal life and cited the same reasons in her resignation.

Monique Meche, a Vice President of Twitter Public Policy in a statement said, ""At the start of this year, Mahima Kaul decided to step down from her role as Twitter Public Policy Director for India and South Asia to take a well-deserved break. It's a loss for all of us at Twitter, but after more than five years in the role we respect her desire to focus on the most important people and relationships in her personal life. Mahima will continue in her role till the end of March and will support the transition."
