18-year-old Shweta Singh, who is allegedly the mastermind behind the notorious "Bulli Bai" app, was held by a Mumbai Police team from Uttarakhand on Tuesday. The action comes a
day after a Mumbai Police held a 21-year-old engineering student from Bengaluru, in connection with the controversy.
What is Bulli Bai case?
"Bulli Bai" popped up on January 1, where the photos of a number of women of a particular religion including journalists, social workers, students and famous personalities were
posted as "available for booking".
Hosting platform Github provided space to "Bulli Bai". It was also being promoted by a Twitter handle with the name @bullibai, with its display picture of a "Khalistani supporter",
and saying women can be booked from the app. This handle was also promoting Khalistani content at the same time.
Who is Shweta Singh?
Shweta Singh was arrested by Mumbai Police on Tuesday for being the prime accused in the Bulli Bai case.
Both of Shweta's parents have perished. Her father died of Covid-19 last year, and her mother died of cancer around 11 years ago. Her older sister has a commerce degree, while her younger
sister and brother are still in school. She was studying for the engineering entrance exams.
She was using a fake Twitter handle (JattKhalsa07) to upload hate posts and objectionable photos and comments.
Connections in Nepal
According to a report by India Today, Shweta was allegedly following the instructions of a Nepalese friend. As per media reports, the major information acquired from the accused revealed
that a Nepal national named Giyou was instructing her on how to use the app. His role, as well as that of others who were engaged with her, is being investigated by police.
She was apprehended in the Udham Singh Nagar district, and Mumbai police officers requested a transit remand until January 5. Vishal Kumar, who was arrested previously in Bengaluru, revealed
her name.
Investigation underway
Vishal Jha stated he was in contact with the woman and that she was in touch with the people working on the Bulli Bai app's posts and activities. Vishal, an engineering student, was
tasked with editing and uploading photos of women from a certain community on the app.
It's also being investigated if the woman (Shweta Singh) created the application herself or received assistance from someone else. She is expected to be taken to Mumbai today and may
appear in a magistrate's court.
