Sangrur bypoll Results: In a major setback to the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) president, Simranjit Singh Mann won the crucial Lok Sabha by-poll from Punjab’s Sangrur, the home turf of CM Bhagwant Singh Mann. Mann defeated AAP's Gurmail Singh with a huge margin and won the majority of rounds counting. Mr. Mann beat his AAP rival Gurmail Singh by a margin of over 7,000 votes from the Sangrur Lok Sabha seat, after a close fight between the two nominees.
Sangrur is known as the stronghold of AAP incumbent Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann from where he had won the parliamentary seat in 2014 and 2019. The seat fell vacant after Mann resigned as MP following his victory from the Dhuri constituency in the state assembly Polls.
The AAP party had campaigned along with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for AAP candidate and party’s district unit chief Gurmail Singh. During the campaigning phase, Opposition parties had attacked the ruling party over the “deteriorating” law and order situation after the gruesome killing of famous Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala.
Simranjit Singh Mann a former IPS officer and Shiromani Akali dal (Amritsar) supremo a brother-in-law of former chief minister of Punjab and erstwhile Patiala riyasat scion Capt Amarinder Singh. Simranjit Singh Mann’s wife Geetinder Kaur and Capt Amarinder Singh’s wife Preneet Kaur are real sisters. According to the affidavit filed in the Election Commission, the profession of Simranjit Singh Mann is Agriculture & Pensions and Rent and Education Graduate.
Simranjit Singh Mann comes from a political family. His father Joginder Singh Mann was a speaker of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha (The Punjab Legislative Assembly) in 1967. His wife Geetinder Kaur Mann is the sister of Maharani Preneet Kaur the wife of the ex-chief minister of Punjab Maharaja Amarinder Singh.
Simranjit Singh Mann and his wife Geetinder Kaur Mann have one son Emaan Singh (who is also a politician) and two daughters Pavit Kaur and Nanki Kaur. Some news agencies also spell his son's name Emaan Singh Mann.
In the affidavit submitted to the Election Commission, Simranjit Singh Mann has declared his total assets to be Rs 13.4 crore, which includes movable assets of Rs 77.3 lakh and immovable assets of Rs 12.7 crore. Talking about the criminal cases against Simranjit Singh Mann, a total of 0 criminal cases are registered against him.
