Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has announced their candidate for the bye-elections in Jalandhar, Punjab. This time AAP has given ticket to Mohinder Bhagat, who had left Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the broom. Mohinder Bhagat is the son of former BJP minister Chunni Lal Bhagat. He has a strong influence in the Jalandhar West assembly constituency.
Who is Mohinder Bhagat?
Mohinder Bhagat had left BJP to join AAP during the bye-elections held in 2023. Mohinder Bhagat was inducted into AAP at Chandigarh. Mohinder's father Chunni Lal Bhagat was a prominent face for the Bharatiya Janata Party in Punjab.
He has also been a minister in the state government. BJP had fielded him in the assembly elections held in February 2022, where he suffered a crushing defeat. Mohinder Bhagat suddenly left BJP during the by-election and joined AAP.
Jalandhar Bye-elections schedule
The official gazette notification was issued on June 14, 2024, marking the formal commencement of the election process. Prospective candidates must file their nominations by June 21, 2024. The scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on June 24, 2024, ensuring all candidates meet the necessary eligibility criteria.
Candidates would be able to withdraw their nomination papers on June 26, 2024. The bye-election polling is scheduled for July 10, 2024, and the counting of votes will be done on July 13, 2024. The entire election process will be completed by July 15, 2024.
