The shocking incident took place near Rouen in Normandy. As per French media reports, a prisoner who was being transported in the van has escaped together with the attackers. As per French media reports, the prisoner who escaped has been identified as La Mouche aka The Fly. La Mouche aka The Fly's real name is Mohamed A, 30, is known to cops for drug trafficking and attempted murder. His latest conviction was for burglary and he was being transferred from one prison to another on what was supposed to be a secret route.
Reports further suggest that Mohamed A is "head of a narcotics network" in France. He is also considered hugely dangerous. The ambush happened near Eure, in Normandy as the van stopped at a tollbooth in Incarville around 11am.
In the attack, three more guards were seriously injured in the gunfight. The prisoner and gunmen are now on the run with two vehicles, one of which was found burned and abandoned earlier today. It is also reported that two French Prison officers have been killed in the attack.
French President Emmanuel Macron wrote on X that "everything is being done to find the perpetrators".
