A recent spree of deaths in Sangrur due to poisonous liquor has raised eyebrows across the district. With a death toll of over 20 deaths, the Police have been trying to put a stop to the fatal liquor’s distribution with sub-par results.
As per reports, there are some reasons that are likely the cause of this. As per reports, it was initially believed that the supply of poisonous liquor in Sangrur was being made only from Gujjars of Didba, but the deaths in Sunam on Friday proved that it had reached other cities.
It is important to note that Police personnel of the Excise Department posted in Sunam area failed to put a stop to the illegal distribution of liquor. Didba SHO and Sunam SHO were also not able to crack down on the smugglers.
Illegal liquor smuggling is a fairly common sight in Sangrur as per reports. In a village in Gurdaspur, 70% of the people are engaged in making illegal liquor.
SDM Didba has been appointed chairman of the high power investigation committee formed in the poisonous liquor case in Sangrur. DSP Didba, SMO Didba and ETO (Excise) have been appointed as members. The police has also formed an investigation committee under the leadership of SP.
In statement on X, DGP Punjab Police Gaurav Yadav shared on X that, “A High-level Committee has been setup to supervise the uncovering of the backward and forward linkages in a professional & scientific manner to unearth the nexus behind the whole matter. A four-member SIT headed by ADGP Law & Order Gurinder Dhillon IPS, and including DIG Patiala Range Harcharan Bhullar IPS, SSP Sangrur Sartaj Chahal IPS & Additional Commissioner (Excise) Naresh Dubey will supervise the investigations.” He also appealed to everyone to maintain peace and harmony and not to fall prey to unverified rumours.
