In a heartbreaking development, Assam IPS Officer & Home Secretary Shiladitya Chetia died by suicide after his wife's death. As per reports, Shiladitya Chetia's suicide death was confirmed on Tuesday after he shot himself with his service weapon. As per reports, Shiladitya Chetia died by suicide at a private hospital in Guwahati after his wife passed away following prolonged illness. Shiladitya Chetia shot himself at the same spot i.e. in the ICU of the hospital where his wife died. Shiladitya Chetia's wife was suffering from brain tumour and was admitted to the hospital for the last few months. Now, the question arises who was Shiladitya Chetia? Who was Shiladitya Chetia?
Shiladitya Chetia was a 2009-batch IPS officer. He had earlier served as SP of Tinsukia and Sonitpur districts, and commandant of the 4th Battalion of the Assam Police before being posted as the home secretary of the state. IPS Officer Siladitya Chetia was survived by two sisters. He had lost his mother and mother-in-law in the past few months. Reports further suggest that Siladitya Chetia's wife name was Agamonee Barbaruah and she had been receiving medical treatment at Nemcare Hospital in Guwahati City.
Shiladitya Chetia was on leave for the past four months due to his ailing wife. Shiladitya Chetia's father, Pramod Chetia, reportedly had also been a DIG rank police officer and passed away a few years ago. Chetia and his wife had no children.
MD of the hospital Dr Hitesh Baruah was quoted by a news portal saying, "She (Chetia's wife) had been battling for around two years and had received treatment elsewhere as well. For the last two months, she had been receiving conservative treatment here and he had taken up a separate room in the hospital."
Assam Police took to its official X handle and wrote, "We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Shri Shiladitya Chetia IPS 2009 RR, Secretary Home & Political, Government of Assam and his wife. The entire police family is in profound grief and shock. Shri Chetia's unwavering dedication to Assam will always be cherished."
