In a major development, America's Silicon Valley Pioneer and Intel's Co-Founder Gordon Moore on Friday died at his Hawaii residence. Gordon Moore was 94 years old when he breathed his last. Giving updates on Gordon Moore's death, Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation in a statement said that he was surrounded by family at his home in Hawaii when he took his last breath. Gordon Moore holds significant importance in the history of America's Silicon Valley revolution. Gordon Moore played an important role in the design and manufacture of semiconductor chips that formed the bedrock for the entire digital devices industry and launched Silicon Valley. Who was Gordon Moore?
Gordon Earle Moore was born in San Francisco on Jan. 3, 1929. He earned his Ph.D. in chemistry and physics from California Institute of Technology in 1954. After a brief research career, Moore joined Silicon valley's first semiconductor company Shockley Semiconductor in 1956 where he met his future Intel co-founder Robert Noyce. Moore along with Noyce and six other colleagues departed from Shockley Semiconductor and launched Fairchild Semiconductor in 1957. At Fairchild, Moore played a key role in the production of the world's first diffused silicon transistors and commercially viable integrated circuits.
Later, Moore and his long time colleague Robert Noyce founded Intel in July 1968, where he initially served as executive vice president until 1975, when he became president. In 1979, Moore was named chairman of the board and chief executive officer, posts he held until 1987, when he gave up the CEO position and continued as chairman. In 1968, Moore and Noyce started a memory chip company called Integrated Electronics which later came to be known as Intel. In 1965, Moore predicted that the number of transistors on microchips would double roughly every year due to improvements in technology. This became known as Moore's Law. 10 years later, Moore revised his prediction to a doubling of transistors on an integrated circuit every two years.
In 1979, Intel appointed Moore as their CEO and Chairman of the Board. He became chairman emeritus in 1997 and retired from Intel in 2006.
