India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi's mother passed away at the age of 100 on Friday. She took her last breath at UN Mehta Hospital where she was admitted on Tuesday after complaining about breathlessness. PM Modi himself shared the news of his mother’s demise through a tweet. He wrote, “glorious century now rests at God’s feet. In my mother, I felt that the trinity which contains the journey of an ascetic. She was a symbol of a selfless person whose life was committed to her values.
PM Modi reached Ahemdabad at 7:45 am from where he went straight to his brother’s house from where all the last rites of his mother Heeraba will take place. Prime Minister after reaching his brother’s home, showered flowers on his mother and took her blessings for the very last time. He also provided a shoulder for his mother’s body that was being taken to the crematorium. She lit the pyre allowing his mother to leave for her heavenly abode.
Who was Heeraben Modi?
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mother Heeraben Modi was born on June 18, 1923, in Visnagar, Mehsana, Gujarat. She had a struggleful life as she lost her mother at a very young age. She was then married to a tea-seller Damodardas Mulchand Modi at 13. Heeraben Modi used to live in Rysan Village, Gandhinagar with PM Modi’s younger brother.
Heeraben Modi made to news when in November 2016 she was clicked standing outside an ATM to show support towards his son’s decision of demonetization. She was a woman of great values who lives her life to the fullest. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was very close to her mother like any other son is. He used to visit his mother regularly, used to seek her blessings, wash her feet and eat food from his hand. Prime Minister Narendra Modi once said that he has seen his mother as a powerful warrior to raise him up after his father passed away.
Talking about her life, to date she used to wake up at 4 am in the morning and do all the household chores by herself. Heeraben Modi was tolerant of all the adverse conditions. She faced a lot of hardships after her husband passed away. She washed clothes, and cleaned dishes at other people’s houses to raise her son but never gave up. He also revealed that even though she never went to school, Heeraben Modi was the master of all homemade remedies. She acted like a doctor for the whole village.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi revealed that working 18-20 hours a day and keep on experimenting are some of the greatest life lessons that he learnt from his mother.
Although PM Modi’s mother’s funeral was an intimate affair and not many leaders reached there, all gave their heartfelt condolences through their tweets.
