Former Olympic medal-winning boxer Vijender Singh on Wednesday quit the Congress party and joined the BJP. Vijender Singhjoined the BJP hours after retweeting a video of Rahul Gandhi mocking Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Earlier, speculation was rife that Vijender Singh might be fielded by the Congress from Mathura against BJP’s Hema Malini, who is in the fray for the third time in a row. However, the boxer has now joined the BJP. Interestingly, during an interview with a news portal, Vijender Singh gave a bizarre reason why he joined the BJP and quit the Congress party.
Why did Vijender Singh quit Congress?
On being asked the reason for his sudden switch to the BJP, Vijender Singh said, "This morning when I woke up I realised that I’m doing something wrong from the wrong platform. I should join the BJP and from here I will go in the right direction."
During a press conference on joining the BJP, Vijender Singh said, "It’s a homecoming for me after five years as I had contested the poll in 2019." Singh further said, "he is inspired by the honour given by the BJP government to the players". The boxer joined the BJP in the presence of the party's national General Secretary Vinod Tawde. Last week, the boxer in a post on X, wrote, “Wherever the public wants, I am ready.”
Interestingly, Vijender walked with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi after joining the 'Bharat Jodo Yatra' first in Khargone in Madhya Pradesh and later in Haryana’s Karnal district.
