According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), “HIV is not an easy virus to defeat”. Every year, the world celebrates “World AIDS Day” is celebrated on December 1. As the name suggests, the day is celebrated to raise awareness about the disease and it also supports the people who are dealing with HIV/AIDS.
According to the statics shared by WHO, there were an estimated 37.7 million (30.2 – 45.1 million) people living with HIV at the end of 2020, over two-thirds of whom (25.4 million) are in the WHO African Region. In 2020, 680 000 (480 000 – 1 million) people died from HIV-related causes and 1.5 million (1 – 2 million) people acquired HIV.
World AIDS Day 2021: Theme
The day is celebrated under a specific theme, every year. In 2021, the theme for the day is – “End inequalities. End AIDS”. The health organisation states that with a special focus on reaching people left behind, WHO and its partners are highlighting the growing inequalities in access to essential HIV services.

World AIDS Day 2021: History
The day was the first-ever international day for global health. For the first time, it was celebrated in the year 1988. From then, organizations and individuals across the world bring attention to the HIV epidemic, endeavour to increase HIV awareness and knowledge, speak out against HIV stigma, and call for an increased response to move toward ending HIV across the world.

On 1 December 2021, WHO is calling on global leaders and citizens to rally to confront the inequalities that drive AIDS and to reach people who are currently not receiving essential HIV services.
