Every year, world contraceptive day is celebrated on September, 26 at the international level. The aim behind the day is to raise awareness about the right of all couples and individuals to decide freely and responsibly on the number and spacing of their children.

Ahead of the World Contraception Day, the UN experts issued the following statement, “Access to family planning and contraception services, free of coercion or impediment, is a component of the right to health that is central to women’s autonomy and agency and key in the realization of women’s rights to equality and non-discrimination, life, sexual and reproductive health rights and other human rights.”

World Contraceptive Day 2021: Types of contraceptives

Contraceptives stop the males’ sperm from meeting with the females’ egg (ova), which stops the process of reproduction and unwanted pregnancy can be delayed. On the occasion of World Contraceptive Day, let us throw the light on some of the contraceptive methods:

1.) Cap: It is a circular dome made of thin and soft silicone. It is inserted into the vagina before sex and covers the cervix so that sperm cannot get into the womb. Caps are reusable and are safe for the environment.

2.) Contraceptive pills: The oral pills, or contraceptive pills, produce women hormones like estrogen and progesterone. The hormones in the pill prevent a woman's ovaries from releasing an egg. The pill is usually taken to prevent pregnancy, but can also be used to treat painful periods, heavy periods, premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and endometriosis.

3.) Contraceptive injection: The contraceptive injections, like Depo-Provera, Sayana Press or Noristerat avoid pregnancy as it releases progesterone in the body. The effect of injection stays for around eight to 12 weeks.

4.) Condoms: There are two types of condoms: male condoms, which are worn on the penis, and female condoms, which are worn inside the vagina.

(i) Male condoms are made from very thin latex (rubber), polyisoprene or polyurethane, and are designed to stop a man's semen from coming into contact with his sexual partner.

(ii) Female condoms are made from thin, soft plastic called polyurethane (some male condoms are made from this too).
