World Environment Day is observed on June 5 every year. It is the biggest awareness campaign launched by the United Nations in the early 70s. This day is celebrated to cherish the environment around us. 

This year the World Environment Day is special as the World Health Organization (WHO) has joined hands with the United Nations and other such collaborations like the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. 

THEME of World Environment Day 2021:

This year the theme for World Environment Day is “Reimagine, Recreate, Restore”. The theme is based on the 10-year plan which would work on stopping environmental degradation. The plan is expected to be launched by the UN this year. 

The UN on this World Environment Day requested people to change their lifestyle and make it more sustainable and environmentally friendly. 

This year Pakistan would host World Environment Day. Along with the UNEP Pakistan would highlight the significance of ecosystem restoration.

HISTORY of World Environment Day:                         

World Environment Day was first launched by the United Nations of General Assembly (UNGA) in the year 1972. The decision was taken on the first day of the Stockholm Conference on the human environment. 

First World Environment Day was celebrated in 1974 and the theme was “Only one Earth.”

SIGNIFICANCE of World Environment Day:

The significance of World Environment Day is to spread awareness about the effect of pollution, climate change on our environment. The day also focuses on raising awareness about the importance of a clean and green environment. 

The day allows citizens to pause, think and take a responsible step to preserve and prevent our environment.
