World Sports Journalist Day is observed on July 2 every year. The term “sports journalism” refers to the writing of sports-related topics, it is one of the important topics that any news organization covers. A sports journalist is the one who covers and writes about sports events.
To maintain the high standards of sports journalism, there are many local as well as national news associations and sports journalists from all over the world have been connected through the International Sports Press Association (Association Internationale de la Presse Sportive, AIPS).
AIPS was founded during the Summer Olympics in Paris on July 2, 1924. It has nearly 160 national associations throughout the world. It comprises continental sub-associations and national associations. AIPS works with its partners, which are – International Olympic Committee, Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), International Association of Athletics Federations and others.

The Sports Journalist Day was established by the AIPS in the year 1994 to mark its 70th anniversary of the foundation. The day is celebrated to celebrate the creation of AIPS and the achievement of the members of sports media. It also encourages the sports journalists to set an example in front of the world, not just the world of sports but to the world at large.
