World Student’s Day is celebrated every year on October 15 on the birth anniversary of former President Late Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. The day is observed because he was a dedicated teacher and loved children. He pictured India to be strong and self-reliant and counted on teachers and students as the future of the country.
Dr Kalam was a great teacher himself and an eminent Indian scientist who brought numerous glory for India. He was a respected statesman. He possessed a lovely quality of becoming friends with common people, especially youngsters, he was referred to as a 'people's president.' After completing his term as the 11th President of India, Dr Kalam went back to teaching on the very next day.
We remember Dr APJ Abdul Kalam as an inspiration who encouraged students to dream big and not to be frightened of failure. He taught us to never give up on anything. Dr Kalam was a role model for teachers as well as he believed that good teachers make great human beings.
The former president believed, "The aim of the teacher should be to build character, human values, enhance the learning capacity of children through technology and build the confidence among children to be innovative and creative which in turn will make them competitive to face the future."
Dr APJ Abdul Kalam while addressing the presentation of National Award to Teachers in 2004 said, "The creativity is indeed the result of the education process and the environment of the school and above all the teachers' capability in igniting the minds of the students. The essence of it can be seen in the following verses: Learning gives creativity, Creativity leads to thinking, Thinking provides knowledge, Knowledge makes you great.”
He was also credited for India's military missile systems as well as civilian space programmes.
The reason why World Student’s Day is celebrated on Dr Kalam’s birthday is that he loved students and was always surrounded by children.
The following quote well describes his love for students, "Dream, Dream, Dream, Dreams transform into thoughts. And thoughts result in action." He had also further said, to students, "If you fail, never give up because FAIL means 'the first attempt in learning'."
