The famous multi-storey Mehfil building collapsed in Sector 17 of Chandigarh on Monday morning at 7 am. A large part of this building suddenly collapsed. Fortunately, there was no person present near the building at the time of the incident, due to which there was no loss of life.
Mehfil Restaurant, which was once the main attraction of Sector 17, was closed for many years. This building was vacant for a long time. Administration officials themselves are present at the spot. DC office and a famous showroom are located near it. According to information, this building was built around 1970.
This building is located at a prime location in the city. According to people, this building was 5 stories high. They said that when this building collapsed, it felt like a blast.
People present at the spot said that construction work was going on in the building for about 2 months. Due to this, cracks appeared in the building. As soon as the matter came to the notice of the administration, the building was sealed on 27 December.
According to eyewitnesses, the contractor working on the building fled after the sealing. The owners of the adjacent building said that proper steps were not taken during the renovation. Due to this, their buildings have also suffered damage.
This accident has raised serious questions about the safety. After the incident, local traders and residents have appealed to the administration to immediately inspect Sector 17 and other old buildings and demolish or repair these buildings.
