The name of this popular baseball team was chosen by the owner John I. Taylor after the 1907 season. It referred to the red hose in the team uniform beginning in 1908. The Spanish language media sometimes refers to the team as Medias Rojas, which is a translation of the term red socks. Previously, the team had no nickname and were simply called as Boston, Bostonians, the Bostons, Americans and Boston Americans.

On 18th December 1907, Taylor announced that the club had officially adopted red as its new team colour and their uniforms featured a large icon of a red stocking at the shirt front. In 1908, the American League team finally had an official nickname ‘Red Sox’.

This iconic team has won the MVP Award 12 times, the Cy Young Award seven times, Rookie of the Year six times and Manager of the Year twice. Red Sox principal owner John Henry had once stated, “To be elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame upon his first year of eligibility speaks volumes regarding Pedro's outstanding career, and is a testament to the respect and admiration so many in baseball have for him.”
