The surge in COVID cases around the country has put the Health Department on high alert. The Punjab Government has subsequently mandated facemasks in public places. The new variant, JN.1, was labeled a ‘variant of interest’ by the WHO due to its rate of spread. But no evidence suggests that it could be responsible for more adverse effects than other variants. Nevertheless, the government has issued an advisory for the general public.

The health department is now on high-alert regarding the new variant of Corona JN.1 in Punjab. As a precaution, the Health Department has made it mandatory to wear masks in hospitals and crowded places. People have been advised avoid public places and minimize crowding. Civil surgeons of all the districts have been instructed to take appropriate steps to prevent the spread of COVID.

According to the advisory, it will now be compulsory to wear masks in crowded places. Doctors, paramedical and other health workers in hospitals will have to compulsorily wear masks. Patients and their attendants will also have to compulsorily wear masks and follow other precautions.

The health department has advised to cover the nose and mouth with a handkerchief or elbow while sneezing. It is also advised to try and wash one’s hands frequently with soap and water. Limit personal contact if respiratory symptoms are present i.e. trouble in breathing and coughing.

Consult a doctor in case of  symptoms such as fever, flu-like symptoms, coughing and difficulty in breathing. Wear a mask to cover the mouth and nose when going to the doctor. Get tested on doctor's advice and avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with the hands. Do not spit in public places.

For any kind of medical advice, it is advised to contact medical emergency helpline 104.
