India's national capital New Delhi on Saturday night will go under almost total darkness for 1 hour. Yes! you heard it right. Delhites will switch off the non-essential lights starting from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm. It is expected that other states may also follow the trends. The reason behind switching off the lights for 1 hour on March 22, 2025, is Earth Day 2025. Notably, the Global Earth Hour initiative is not only limited to India but also various countries around the world. It is a collective effort to highlight the importance of sustainable energy consumption.
The initiative is supported by BSES and WWF-India. Earth Hour is observed in over 190 countries. BSES supplies power to over 50 lakh consumers in Delhi. The Board has urged residents, businesses, and institutions to participate in an hour-long Earth Hour initiative.
In the past years, Delhiites saved electricity on a large scale during Earth Hour. Last year, 206 MW of electricity was saved in one hour. BSES consumers saved 130 MW of electricity while NDPL made a significant contribution by saving 70 MW. Earth Hour is an annual program of WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature/World Wildlife Fund), under which people all over the world are encouraged to keep unnecessary lights and electrical appliances switched off at their homes and workplaces during a fixed time keeping in mind climate change.
BSES has advised people to switch off the electricity of homes and invest in liveable earth for humans. People can build a better future by protecting the natural world. Climate change has increased concern about the state of the earth. Sudden weather changes and unpredictable temperatures point to this crisis.
