Kamala Harris' victory in US Elections 2024 means for India?
Since Kamala Harris is half-Indian, Indians are softly inclined towards her. For the unversed, Kamala Harris was born to a mother from Tamil Nadu and a father from Jamaica. Growing up, she visited her maternal family several times in Chennai and has talked about her Indian heritage on several occasions over the years. However, her engagement with India's domestic and international affairs has remained limited.
Notably, Harris in 2019 criticised the Modi government’s decision to revoke Article 370. However, in 2021, she met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and commended India for its efforts in COVID-19 vaccine production. She also expressed praise for Modi in 2023.
Kamala Harris and US-India ties
Notably, the India-US relationship has been on a positive scale under the leadership of Biden and Harris. If leaving aside occasional hiccups between New Delhi and Washington, the Modi government has been on good terms with the Biden & Harris administrations. However, PM Modi is known for having a good relationship with the Republican candidate Donald Trump as well.
It is said that the bilateral ties between India and the US will remain unchanged in the next administration. During the Biden administration, the US and India have significantly strengthened strategic ties, notably by enhancing the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QUAD) to counter Chinese influence in the Indo-Pacific region. The Biden administration also finalised several important defence and technology deals with India, including the recent sale of Predator drones, and has been a vocal supporter of India amid tensions with China. Harris, throughout her campaign, has consistently criticised China’s assertive actions in Asia and the Indo-Pacific.
Kamala Harris and the US' trades with India
Donald Trump has been quite vocal and criticised New Delhi's hefty tariff on exported goods. On the other hand, Kamala Harris has not criticised India over this. Therefore, it is expected that Kamala Harris will keep the Biden administration policy unchanged when it comes to trade with India.
Talking about immigration, Harris has expressed her strong stance against illegal immigration. During her first visit to the border as the Democratic nominee, she proposed measures to further restrict asylum claims, building on policies established earlier by the Biden administration.
Notably, the Biden administration has come under the scanner over the Bangladesh issue and not saying anything about the violence against Hindus. On the other hand, Trump has posted on his X account that he will talk to PM Modi and will work on reducing violence against Hindus.
