After the success of e-challans in Chandigarh, the government of Punjab introduced an automated e-challan system in Mohali, as well - making it the first Punjab city to follow this initiative. Now, the residents of Mohali will receive photographic evidence of their traffic violations at their doorsteps.
The system has been introduced under the City Surveillance System and Traffic Management System (Phase-1) under the supervision of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. The total cost of the project is approximately ₹21 crore. As per the government of Punjab, this new initiative will help in ensuring the safety of people and will surely contribute towards the improvement of traffic and its management.
E-challans with AI-powered sensors
The e-challans will be issued to the offenders after traffic violations are detected through advanced surveillance cameras. The issued e-challan will have a photograph - showing the traffic violation - which will be directly sent to the registered address of the violators.
It is not just for revenue collection: CM Mann
While addressing the general public, CM Bhagwant Mann stated that the initiative has been primarily introduced for the safety of the public. He further clarified that revenue generation or collection is not an aim or objective behind the same.
Highlighting the major goal, he mentioned that the prime motive behind the initiative remains reducing accidents and ensuring road safety.
High traffic rules violations reported just in one week
According to official data from the government of Punjab, as many as 34 lakh vehicles entered Mohali within a week of implementation of the initiative, and out of the total, 2.14 lakh violated the traffic rules.
Expansion of new rule to other Punjab Cities
Following Mohali, it is anticipated that similar rules linked to e-challans will also be introduced in other Punjab cities, including Jalandhar, Amritsar, Ludhiana, Patiala, Fatehgarh Sahib, and Ropar, further strengthening traffic enforcement across the state.
