NIRF Ranking 2024: Two Punjab institutes feature in top 10 educational institutes of India in separate categories

Union Minister for Education Dharmendra Pradhan on August 12, 2024 released the India Rankings 2024, which implements the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) drafted for this purpose by the Ministry of Education in 2015. NIRF Rankings 2024 ranked colleges and universities of India based on multiple factors. Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan while addressing the audience said that Rankings, ratings and accreditation is a vital recommendation of NEP 2020 and NIRF rankings deeply reflect the spirit of NEP. The colleges or universities added in the ranking based on 'excellence in teaching, innovation, research, graduation outcomes, etc'. As per the official release, the NIRF 2024 rankings contained top 100 in overall category- 23 state public universities,  22 private deemed universities, 16 IITs, 9 NITs , 7 each central universities 7 private universities, 4 each AIIMS, IISERs and Govt. deemed universities, 3 Other CFTIs and 1 college.

Notably, two educational insititution from Punjab made in the top 5 ot top list in seperate catergories. As per NIRF Rankings 2024, National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research in Mohali, Punjab is ranked number 9 in top 10 Pharmacy institutes. As per reports, NIPER Mohali comes under India's Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers. The institute offers Masters and Doctoral degrees in pharmaceutical sciences among others. Jamia Hamdard tops this category.

On the other hand, Punjab Agricultural University in Ludhiana, Punjab ranked number 3 in top 5 institutes in Agriculture and Allied Sectors. 

What were the criteria in NIRF Rankings 2024?

As per the release, there were 5 parameters set for the colleges to feature in NIRF Rankings 2024. The five parameters are- Teaching, Learning & Resources, Research and Professional Practice, Graduation Outcome, Outreach and Inclusivity, and Perception. 

Coming back to the rankings, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras retained its 1st position in Overall Category for the sixth consecutive year, i.e. 2019 to 2024 and in Engineering for 9th consecutive year, , i.e. from 2016 to 2024.  Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru topped the Universities Category for ninth consecutive year, i.e. from 2016 to 2024. It stood first in Research Institutions Category for the fourth consecutive year, i.e. from 2021 to 2024.
