The trailer of the much-awaited series of the year, Poacher was released on Thursday, and in no time it became the talk of the town. Poacher will be released on Amazon Prime Video on February 23, 2024. The build-up around Poacher is too high as it is created, written, and directed by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Richie Mehta. Apart from Richie Mehta, Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt is the executive producer of the upcoming eight-episode series of Poacher. Apart from the dark theme and gripping storyline, Poacher features critically acclaimed actors like Nimisha Sajayan, Roshan Mathew, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, and more in the leading roles. The story of Poacher is based in Kerala and therefore the question arises whether Poacher is a true story or Poacher is a real story or not. Is Poacher a true story?
The answer is yes. The makers have flashed that Poacher is inspired by real-life events that took place in Malayattoor, Kerala where many elephants were killed by hunters for the illegal ivory trade. Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt was quoted saying, "Being a part of this project is such a source of pride for me and our entire team at Eternal. Notably, the makers have kept Poacher's storyline under wraps, therefore, what exact incident inspired Richie Mehta's series cannot be determined. However, True Scoop News dug deep into the elephant poaching cases in Kerala and have brought a few cases that may have inspired Poacher True Story.
Poacher Real Story
As per a 2019 report, the Forest Department chargesheeted 41 persons in elephant poaching case. Sudheesh Chandra Babu, an accused in the case was absconding. But, he was arrested along with his daughter Amritha by sleuths attached to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) Kolkata unit from Kona Expressway near Santragachi Railway Station. Elephant tusks weighing 3.144 kgs, worth `30.93 lakh were seized from the duo during the arrest. Further, the DRI team raided residential premises on Rajdhanga Road based on the information provided by the duo and seized ivory idols and jewellery worth Rs 72.35 lakh.
The report suggested that a gang of poachers had killed as many as 14 wild elephants in the forests under Malayattoor and Vazhachal divisions for tusks from 2013 to 2015. A gang led by Aikaramattom Vasu, Saji and Kunjumon killed nine tuskers in Thundathil Range, one in Kuttampuzha range and two each in Athirappally and Sholayar ranges under Vazhachal division for tusks. They transported the tusks to Thiruvananthapuram, where idols were made out of the tusks in the godown of Aji Bright, another accused. Vasu, the key accused in the case committed suicide later.
