The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has said that withdrawn Rs 2,000 notes can also be exchanged with the help of post offices. People can send Rs 2,000 notes from any post office to any of 19 RBI offices to get the amount credited to their bank account. the Reserve Bank said in a set of 'Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)' on its website. For this, people will have to fill an application form available online and send the notes to any facility of Indian Post. The form is available on RBI website. In fact, people are still queuing up at the regional offices of RBI to exchange Rs 2,000 notes.
According to RBI’s Frequently Asked Questions, an individual can exchange or deposit notes up to a limit of Rs 20,000 at any one time in the 19 RBI offices through the post office facilities. The RBI had announced its decision to withdraw the Rs 2,000 note in May last year. This note was issued for the first time since the introduction of demonetisation in November 2016.
RBI had said that the decision to withdraw Rs 2,000 notes was taken because most of these notes have completed their expected life span and people are not using them much for transactions. More than 97.38 percent of the Rs 2,000 notes in circulation in May 2023 have been withdrawn. Although these notes are no longer allowed to be exchanged or deposited in bank branches, RBI has provided alternative means.
