The cabinet meeting chaired by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann at his residence in Chandigarh ended on Wednesday. Following that Punjab CM Mann called a press conference in which he welcomed Shiromani Akali Dal MLA Dr. Sukhwinder Singh Sukhi into the the Aam Aadmi Party. On this occasion, CM Mann said that he is moving forward with the thinking of Dr. Ambedkar. Dr. Sukhi during the press conference highlighted why he decided to join the AAP and leave SAD.
Dr. Sukhi narrated a few incidents due to which his loyalty shifted to AAP. One was the Punjab Government's nod to open a medical college and hospital on the land of Shaheed-E-Aazam Bhagat Singh and another one was the Punjab CM's gesture when he was once pointing out a corrupt politician. Dr. Sukhi revealed that when he was in the Vidhan Sabha, Punjab CM Mann called him and asked about the issue. After he informed CM Mann, he immediately suspended the politician on charges of corruption. Dr. Sukhi also pointed out that despite AAP having 92 MLAs, Punjab CM Mann welcomed him into the party wholeheartedly. Then, I finally realised that I could work with such a Chief Minister with full loyalty.
On being asked whether he would resign as an MLA, Dr. Sukhi said that he would see what could be done legally. Dr. Sukhi further said that he does not have any problem with SAD chief Sukhbir Badal but for the development of Banga, he is joining the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
For the unversed, Sukhwinder Singh is an MLA from the Banga assembly constituency of Punjab. In 2017 and 2022, Dr. Sukhi was elected as a Member of the Punjab Legislative Assembly from the Banga Assembly constituency.
