Since Sector 36 is inspired by the Nithari Killings, let's understand the case in detail. In 2006 children started to go missing from the slums of Nithari in Noida. As per reports, the Nithari serial killings involved kidnapping, sexual abuse, and murder of children and young women in Noida. The main suspects were Surinder Koli, a domestic help, and Moninder Singh Pandher, the owner of the house where the crimes took place.
Surinder Koli allegedly lured the victims (mostly children) by offering sweets and chocolates. Once inside, he would strangle them, engage in necrophilia, dismember their bodies, and in some cases, cannibalise the remains. The bones and body parts were disposed of in a drain or the backyard behind the house, leading to the discovery of multiple remains that shocked the nation.
Who is real-life Balbir Singh Bassi?
Actor Akash Khurana plays the character of Balbir Singh Bassi. The movie showcased Balbir Singh Bassi as a high-end businessman whose empire has spread across various sectors including coal mines. Balbir Singh Bassi is a pedophile who is actually based in Karnal, Haryana but also owns a house in Delhi near the slum area. Bassi has kept Prem as the servant & caretaker of his house in Delhi. The movie has showcased how Balbir Singh Bassi used his influence and reach in the Delhi Police to make himself clear of all charges. In fact, the film has showcased how his friend Jawahar who is heading a team of IBI (the fictional name of CBI) helped him in the investigation and put all the blame on Prem.
Talking about the Real-Life Balbir Singh Bassi, since the movie is inspired by Nithari Killings, Balbir Singh Bassi is Moninder Singh Pandher. Moninder Singh Pandher was convicted in two out of the five cases against him, and his servant Surinder Koli, who supposedly aided him, was convicted in 10 out of the 16 cases against him. Both were originally sentenced to death, however in 2023, Allahabad High Court acquitted them citing lack of evidence.
Notably, some facts have been dramatised. For instance, the makers have shown Bassi of hiring people to kill Sub Inspector Pandey. In real life Moninder Singh Pandher wasn’t accused of killing any policemen, though there were people who said that the system was rigged and that Pandher got out since the officials sitting higher up the food chain were on his side.
Pandher is an industrialist who studied from 1963-73 at the prestigious Bishop Cotton School in Shimla and graduated from St. Stephen's College, Delhi. Pandher was the owner of the D-5 bungalow in Noida's Sector 31 where 16 children were raped, murdered, and mutilated.
