On Monday, 4th November, Sikh organizations staged a protest outside a dhaba in Jalandhar. They claimed that the name of the dhaba, ‘Nanak Saroop,’ is disrespectful. They staged the protest against the dhaba, located near to a liquor outlet that serves chicken and eggs. The protestors considered it offensive because of the association of dhaba’s name with Guru Nanak’s name.
During the protest, police were also called to the spot. Members of the Sikh organizations tore down the dhaba’s board and demanded immediate action. As par the reports, this dhaba is owned by a woman who had closed the its shutters after the protest began.
According to sources, this incident took place late at night and the SHO of Division Number 6 (Model Town) police station arrived with a team for investigation.
Harvinder Singh, a member of the Sikh organization, has stated that the ‘Nanak Saroop Dhaba’ is located at Guru Tegh Bahadur Nagar Chowk and is not a descent dhaba but it rather functions as a bar. He claimed that people were drinking alcohol and eating chicken on the premises. This dhaba being named after Sikh Guru has offended these protestors.
Harvinder Singh said that the dhaba is being run by writing the name of our Gurus. An attempt has been made to hurt the sentiments of Sikhs. This is just an attempt to spoil the atmosphere. When Sikh organizations came to know about it, we reached here.
“Using the name of our Gurus in such a dhaba is an attempt to hurt Sikh sentiments and disturb the peace.” The organizations demanded that the establishment to be renamed in order to respect the religious sentiments.
