For the unversed, the Global Hunger Index (GHI) is a tool used by international humanitarian agencies to measure and track hunger levels with GHI scores based on under-nourishment and child mortality indicators across 127 countries.

What is India's ranking on the World Hunger Index 2024?
As per reports, out of 127 countries, India's ranking on the World Hunger Index 2024 is 105. The World Hunger Index outlines data in terms of India. India is among 42 countries that fall within the “serious” category, alongside Pakistan and Afghanistan, with other South Asian neighbours such as Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka showing better GHI scores to be listed under the “moderate” category.
Notably, India has many times rejected such reports that place it worse than Pakistan, and Sri Lanka which are undergoing economic turmoil.
“With a score of 27.3 in 2024 Global Hunger Index, India has a level of hunger that is serious,” reads the Hungerindex entry. The report further says that India’s GHI score is based on the values of four component indicators: 13.7 percent of the population is undernourished, 35.5 percent of children under five are stunted with 18.7 percent of them being wasted, and 2.9 percent of children die before their fifth birthday.
In August 2024, PM Modi talked about food security. During 32nd International Conference of Agricultural Economists, PM Modi said agriculture is at the centre of India’s economic policy, adding the recent Union Budget gave a big push to sustainable and climate-resilient farming and developing a complete ecosystem to support Indian farmers. PM Modi further recalled that there was a time when India’s food security was a concern for the world. “But now, India is working to provide solutions for global food security and global nutritional security.”
